Why Portugal is ideal for beginners easy transport, friendly locals, beautiful cities, and English widely spoken.
If you are looking for the perfect country to make your very first international trip then Portugal should be at the top of your list. Its one of those rare places that feels foreign and exciting but still really easy and forgiving for beginners.
First of all the language situation is great. In Lisbon, Porto and other tourist areas a lot of people speak at least basic English. You wont have problems ordering food, asking for directions or buying tickets. Of course learning a few Portuguese words like "obrigado" or "por favor" will make locals smile but its not necessary to survive.
Transport in Portugal is surprisingly simple. The trains are modern and run on time especially between main cities. Buses are also comfortable and cheap. In the cities you can easily walk around many interesting places or use cheap Uber and taxis. The metro in Lisbon is clean and straightforward even for first timers.
The cities themselves are beautiful without being overwhelming. Lisbon has those colorful hills with trams but you can take it slow and explore one neighborhood per day. Porto feels more relaxed with its river views and famous bridges. Both places have plenty of cafes where you can sit and watch the world go by when you feel tired.
Safety is another big plus. Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe. You can walk around in the evening in tourist zones without much worry. Of course still keep an eye on your bag in crowded places like any big city but there is no need to be paranoid.
Food is delicious and not scary at all. Pastel de nata, fresh fish, grilled chicken and vegetable soups are easy to love. Portions are generous and waiters are usually patient with tourists. If you are not sure what to order just point at the picture on the menu or ask for recommendations.
The weather is another reason why beginners like it here. Even in winter its mild and sunny compared to many other European countries. Summers are warm but not crazy hot in coastal areas.
One thing to keep in mind the old streets in Lisbon and some other towns can be very steep and made of cobblestones. Wear comfortable shoes or your feet will remind you about it in the evening. Also many buildings dont have elevators so if you have heavy suitcase ask for ground floor room when booking.
Portugal also gives you that nice mix of sea, city and nature. You can spend few days in Lisbon then go to Sintra for fairy tale palaces or head to the beach in Algarve. Everything is doable without complicated planning.
Prices are reasonable too. You can find good food and accommodation without spending too much especially if you travel outside peak summer months.
For nervous first time travelers Portugal feels like a warm friendly hug from the travel world. It gives you confidence without throwing too many challenges at once. Many people who started here later told us that this country made them fall in love with traveling.
If you want your first trip to be memorable but not stressful book Portugal. You will come back home with beautiful photos nice memories and most important with the feeling that you can actually do this. Traveling is not so scary after all.
